“I like highlighting parts a national conversation by taking the punchline to the literal or absurd, says Cheeks, when asked what inspired this satirical take on the ugliest of hot topics. “‘Gay Bullying’ jumped out to me as a phrase that could be interpreted to mean a catty, razor-tongued queen. I figured it’d be unexpected, funny, and spread two good messages: Don’t bully gays. Don’t be a gay bully. I think there may be a link between the bullying of gays and gay bullies, actually. That’s the idea I’m exploring in the follow up to “Gay Bullying,” which I’m working on now.”
In the last year, starry-eyed satirist Cheeks has amassed 10,000 Twitter followers, addicted to his daily doses of wily witticisms, fluffy philosophy and toxic optimism. When not dropping sharp social commentary videos like the recent “It Gets Better When?” or last August’s “Don’t Be A Dick,” which took on Prop 8 apathy in the gay community, Hollywood’s Cheeks is making music.
