This weekend, NBC's long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live decided to make its transgender viewers the punch line of a joke. The sketch was a fake commercial for an estrogen product, intended to help transgender women who are in the process of transitioning.

But there were no “jokes” per se; all the laughs came from the commercial’s offensive and dehumanizing portrayals of transgender women. By telling its audience that transgender women should be laughed at and ridiculed, NBC contributed to an environment that sees transgender people subjected to near-universal discrimination in the workplace and an environment in which at least one transgender person is murdered every month.

Demand that NBC apologize to its transgender viewers and all of those who were deeply offended by seeing the lives of transgender people turned into a punch line – and tell the network to remove this dangerous segment from its website, from Hulu, and from any future reruns of this episode.
