Copperhill Media announces the release of “The Vertical Land – Book Two of the Richard Finch Series” by Max Markham. Markham is a gay writer living in London. Markham has had a picaresque life, often with a military flavour; a lot of his friends are soldiers. His father and both grandfathers were in the Army. He has found himself doing temporary duty with the French forces and, on one occasion, facing the Territorial SAS as an enemy. He has managed to be in the firing line more than once: to date he has been in two coups d’état, barely avoiding a third (in Yemen); one civil war; and narrowly avoided a firing squad (in the Democratic Republic of Congo).
His first novel “The Indigo Bird – an Erotic Novel” is a gay erotic romance seasoned with murder. The main character, Richard Finch, is a handsome, brave and ruthless Lieutenant in the Parachute Regiment. Richard has to be reasonably discreet about his sexuality, because during the 1970s and 1980s, the period of the novel, gays were not officially permitted to serve in the British Army.
The Vertical Land is the sequel to The Indigo Bird, and, once more, Markham provides a rollercoaster of shocks and surprises against backdrops ranging from sophisticated London to raffish Nairobi, to mercilessly beautiful and dangerous remote, up-country Africa.
Everyone who enjoys the genre of romance in general, will find it to be an excellent reading. The reader will learn to appreciate Markham’s sharp mind, his powers of observation and a passion for detail that shows in his writing.

1982, London: James Graveney (now a Lieutenant-Colonel) and Richard Finch (now promoted to Captain), the heroes of Book One of the Richard Finch Series, The Indigo Bird, have had a “good war” in the Falklands, serving respectively with the Fusiliers and the Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment. James’s dynamic wife, Tori, a researcher, was also caught up in the war: she was studying wildlife in the Falklands when the invasion took place.
Now they all have to come back to earth with a bump. Tori is now trying to meet urgent publishers’ deadlines; James is a Lieutenant-Colonel without a command; Richard’s attachment to the SAS has come to an end. What will happen to James and Richard now: an office job or a bowler hat? Both are too horrible to contemplate.
Fate comes to their rescue. James is unexpectedly posted to Nairobi as Military Attaché to the amiable British High Commissioner, Sir Tom Sheridan. A bloody coup in August 1982 ensures that no-one but Richard wants the job of James’s Assistant Military Attaché.
James may be married and outwardly respectable; Richard may be professionally ambitious, but it is not long before the two friends are caught up in a series of adventures – amorous, erotic and downright dangerous – in Kenya and Sudan.
