Former president draws strong criticism from supporters after calling for France's gay marriage laws to be scrapped

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been roundly criticised by his supporters for saying he will revoke gay marriage laws if re-elected in 2017.

Friends and foes alike have turned on Mr Sarkozy, who will bid next week for the leadership of his conservative UMP party.
