The One Direction boys’ statement in support of the London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard in which Zayn Malik notably said “Just be yourself. If that’s who you are, that’s who you are and don’t be afraid to be the person that you are”, is warmly welcomed by Rainbow Direction, the group of LBGTQ+ fans of the band and their allies.

While Harry Styles has always clearly voiced his support for equal rights, statements on Louis Tomlinson’s twitter account last month have hurt a lot of LBGTQ+ fans.

By reaffirming that there is nothing wrong with not being straight, the boys are giving hope and confidence to the LBGTQ+ fans and to all their supporters. Showing support to the LBGTQ+ fans is always important, making it visible is even better.

Seeing their idols say that “gay is okay” is important for the LBGTQ+ community, particularly for those being bullied at school, at work, in the streets or at home.

Making LGBTQ+ support visible is the reason behind the Rainbow Direction campaign. The campaign’s goal is to strengthen the LGBTQ+ fan community and make it visible during One Direction’s Where We Are and On The Road Again tours.

Most recently Rainbow Direction created rainbow heart badges for fans to display on their social media profile as a way to show their support for Harry Styles after his comment that gender was not that important a trait in a potential partner.
