Norwegian footballers fight against homophobia in the new campaign.

The title of this article is taken from the Twitter profile of Vålerenga FC’s keeper Guro Pettersen. In recent weeks, she and several other Norwegian soccer players, coaches and experts fronted by Rafto Foundation campaign #tacklehomophobia.

The intention is to improve the rights of gays and lesbians worldwide. Acting managing director Solveig Moldrheim says that the response from football in Norway has been exceptional.

Rafto Foundation was established in 1987 and every year since, the human rights organisation gives out an award called  the “Rafto Prize”. Back in 2011 it went to Frank Mugisha from Uganda. It was when his own country last year passed a law that criminalised homosexuality that the idea for the campaign arose.

Frank said we needed new voices. We asked which. He said: “We need African church leaders and footballers.” The reason is that religion and football is strong in Uganda, as elsewhere in the world.
