The Empowering Spirits Foundation (ESF), a U.S national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organisation today applauded Salt Lake City prosecutors for dropping trespassing charges against Derek Jones and Matt Aune.

The gay couple was arrested earlier this month by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) security guards for alleged trespassing. The incident occurred after they exchanged a kiss on Main Street Plaza in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The incident led to the ESF kiss-in which took place July 22nd at the San Diego Mormon Temple, in San Diego, CA. ESF members gathered in support of Jones and Aune, and to attempt to engage in dialogue with the LDS Church on LGBT issues.

“We have yet to receive a response to our letter sent to the LDS Church,” said A. Latham Staples, ESF Executive Director. “We will continue to reach out to the LDS Church though in our efforts to engage in dialogue to discuss LGBT issues, and just maybe some will see that we have more similarities than differences.”

The ESF letter sent to Thomas S. Monson, President of the LDS Church, can be found at www.empoweringspirits.org
