The man who could be Ireland's first openly gay president claims he has been sabotaged by comments about his sexuality.

David Norris called the resurgence of an interview he gave ten years ago “the lowest blow of all”.

At the time, Senator Norris who is an academic and renowned James Joyce scholar, was questioned about his sexuality and “paiderastia” – the relations between men and boys in ancient Greece.

Critic Helen Lucy Burke, who wrote the original article in Magill magazine, took to the airwaves to oppose Mr Norris’s bid for the presidential role, u.tv reports.
