Gay rights campaigners and government ministers have blasted England’s top football clubs for failing to sign up to a campaign to tackle homophobia in the sport.
According to The Independent, government ministers and equality campaigners are furious that only 16 of 160 contacted clubs have leant their support to the annual Football v Homophobia campaign, a nine-day event that started on Saturday, Pink Paper reports.
According to Pink Paper , an unnamed government source went as far as to condemn clubs for their “mealy-mouthed excuses” over the failure to use a football ground as a backdrop for the campaign launch.
The source added: “Football’s in the gutter at the moment…And they’ve got real problems with homophobia in dressing rooms and on the terraces. It needs top clubs to speak out repeatedly and as publicly as possible.”
