14 years later Matthew Shepard’s brutal murder still shines light on LGBT hate crimes

On Oct. 12, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming political science and foreign relations student, died after being brutally assaulted.

The openly gay student had been tied to a split-rail fence after being pistol-whipped by two men who left him there to die. The 21-year-old was found about 18 hours later by a bicyclist who thought he was a scarecrow, according to the Matthew Shepard Foundation webpage, The Star reports.
