Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s invites to first LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Conference which will be held Dublin.

The theme for the conference, which will be opened by INMO General Secretary Liam Doran, is ‘Make Your Preference Count’. The keynote address will be delivered by Michael Cashman, CBE, MEP, ex-EastEnders star, playwright and co-founder of the Stonewall Lesbian and Gay Rights Group. Michael’s address will recognise all that has been achieved for LGBT rights in Ireland yet identifying that much more needs to be done.

Other speakers include Deputy Jerry Buttimer TD; Marian Harkin, MEP; Monnine Griffith, Director Marriage Equality; Dr Mel Duffy and Dr Vera Sheridan, DCU; speaker from Gay Doctors Ireland; Nurse Marianne McGriffin and Odhrȧn Allen, Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.

Presentations from the above speakers will include issues such as marriage equality and discrimination against LGBT nurses/midwives.

Dr Mel Duffy and Dr Vera Sheridan from DCU will present research identifying gay and lesbian nurses/midwives’ concerns about the possibility of their professional reputations and promotional prospects being damaged by “coming out”.
