Rugby referee Nigel Owens yesterday told how he almost killed himself as he struggled with his sexuality.

Owens was one of the first people to come out in the world of rugby as gay and he said it was a huge challenge for him to accept who he is.

He spoke of his suicide attempt, at 26, when he climbed up a mountain near his home and took an overdose of paracetamol.

Speaking to Irish radio he said: “I went through some difficult times in my life, I went through some bad states that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

“I did something one night that I will regret for the rest of my life.

“I left a note for my mum and dad and said that I wasn’t able to carry on with my life anymore and walked out of the house.
