Last Sunday Michael Sam, one of the top college players hoping to step up to the NFL in the forthcoming draft, told his 32 prospective employers something he had to get off his chest. He is gay.

While the bravery and honesty of Anton Hysen, Robbie Rogers, Thomas Hitzlsperger, England women’s captain Casey Stoney and diver Tom Daley may have paved the way for a gradual change of perceptions in the UK, in America Sam has, as the New York Times put it, taken a bulldozer to the wall of discrimination.

Let’s hope others are brave enough to follow him through the rubble.
