In 2014 we celebrate Reykjavik Pride for the sixteenth time. Our cozy little pride, originally visited by some fifteen hundred onlookers, has blossomed and evolved into a colorful six day celebration that attracts up to 100 thousand guests from all over the world. Reykjavík Pride is, in fact, one of the biggest little Prides in the world.
Reykjavik Pride is an unquestionably important event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Iceland. The festival promotes visibility and courage and provides us with a platform to manifest our pride before our fellow citizens. The celebrations do not only mark a successful stage in our struggle; Reykjavik Pride is also one of the most vibrant and popular events in Reykjavík’s cultural calendar. By participating in the event in such large numbers, the Icelandic people have shown us valuable support, recognition and respect.
Our board and volunteers are currently working on programming the 2014 Reykjavik Pride, which will run from 5–10 August.
Reykjavik Pride always takes place around the second weekend of August. In 2014 the festival dates are 5–10 August.
It is a 6-day LGBTQ festival in the city, you shouldn’t miss it!
August is the busiest tourist month in Reykjavik and it can be hard at this time of the year to find a hotel room in the city. Those who are planning a visit are urged to make a hotel reservation in advance.
The LGBTQ rights campaign in Iceland has a history of thirty years, a chronicle of struggle and victory almost unique in the world. From being an invisible group of an oppressed minority, the LGBTQ population in Iceland have now gained social and legal rights comparable to the best of its kind in the world. This is clearly reflected in our festivities – a true manifestation of our pride and ambition.
We are pleased to welcome you to Reykjavik Pride. We emphasise that LGBTQ solidarity can only be realised universally. Thank you for joining us – thank you for adding your own special touch of colour to the rainbow shining over Reykjavík and in our hearts on this joyful weekend.
