Opposition senators are to push for a quick, and final, vote on a transgender rights bill, hoping this will give the NDP enough time to pull off a legislative “miracle” and finally make the bill law before MPs hit the campaign trail later this year.

The NDP MP behind the bill, however, says the changes senators have made to the proposed legislation have effectively ensured its death.

Bill C-279 would make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity, which may or may not correspond to a person’s sex at birth. The bill would alter federal law to follow the lead of six provinces and one territory with similar human rights legislation.

The House of Commons approved the legislation more than two years ago. It has sat in the Senate ever since.
