As Mean-Spirited S.B. 2 Clears Senate Hurdle, 
All Eyes Are On the House

After Governor McCrory’s veto, a handful of members - including the Speaker - must decide whether to set North Carolina back.

Yesterday, by a 32-16 vote, the North Carolina Senate voted to override Governor Pat McCrory’s veto of S.B. 2—an unnecessary and mean-spirited bill that would allow, “magistrates, assistant registers of deeds, and deputy registers of deeds to recuse themselves from performing duties related to marriage ceremonies due to sincerely held religious objections.”

Attention now turns to the House, where advocates are hopeful that business-minded Republicans—including Speaker Tim Moore—are more likely to heed an overwhelming chorus of voices speaking out against legislation like S.B. 2.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the America’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organisation, calls on the North Carolina House to stop this legislation once and for all:

“For the sake of the state’s commitment to fairness and economic growth, the North Carolina House should echo Governor Pat McCrory and reject this needless and mean-spirited bill,” said HRC Field Director Marty Rouse. “Speaker Tim Moore has heard from countless fair-minded North Carolinians who oppose this legislation, now he should help lead the fight to halt it once and for all.”
