Advocates have welcomed Kelvin Thomson’s change of heart on marriage equality.

Mr Thomson, who’s Melbourne-based seat of Wills includes the suburbs of Brunswick and Coburg, declared his support for marriage equality on ABC radio this morning. His office subsequently confirmed his position in a phone call with Wills for Marriage Equality convener, Shawn Callahan.

Mr Callahan, said, “On behalf of the many marriage equality supporters in the Wills electorate, I thank Kelvin Thomson for his decision to support marriage equality.”

“We have conducted a strong grass roots campaign in the electorate, and Kelvin Thomson’s decision shows this campaign has worked.”

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said, with several MPs declaring for marriage equality in recent weeks, a majority is in sight.

“With support from MPs like Kelvin Thomson, the numbers in favour of marriage equality are inching closer to a majority in the Lower House.”

Mr Thomson previously opposed marriage equality. He was one of the last Labor members not aligned to the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Union to oppose the reform.
