The Norwegian Government will make it possible to change gender without having a specific diagnosis and without medical treatment. Amnesty says the law puts an end to a dark chapter in Norwegian history.

Proposed amendments to the law on legal sex change received broad support in the consultation process.

On Friday, law proposition was processed in the Council of State (Statsråd) lead by HRH Majesty King Harald  today. It means that you only need to fill out a form to get sex change in the population register, NRK.no reports.

Under the new law, for example, that women who change gender, can keep the ovaries and the ability to bring forth children. It should be possible for people who have reached 16 years to decide whether they want to change their legal gender. Government thus proposes to lower the age limit to change name, from 18 to 16 years.

It is also possible for children and adolescents between 6 and 16 years to change genders, with parental consent.

Now it’s just the vote in the Norwegian Parliament Stortinget before this becomes Norwegian law and Norwegian reality. This is about equality, protection against discrimination and human rights.

This is an important victory for all those who for years have fought for people’s right to be themselves, says Patricia Kaatee, political advisor at Amnesty International in Norway said to NTB.
