The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund joins advocates across the world in commemorating the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, a day set aside to spotlight the ongoing discrimination and violence confronting LGBT people around the globe.

TLDEF

The worldwide event began in 2004 with the goal of persuading policymakers, opinion leaders, and the media to pay attention, take action and help create a climate where LGBT people are protected and treated equally. More than 130 countries will mark the occasion, including dozens where it is illegal to be openly LGBT.

Statement from TLDEF Executive Director Michael Silverman

“We stand in solidarity with millions around the world in highlighting the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Here in the U.S., 21 transgender women were murdered last year and 10 transgender people have been killed in 2016. In a world where transgender people continue to face discrimination at every turn, which contributes to staggering rates of violence, we must all do everything in our power to push back against the many injustices our community has endured.

“Anti-transgender forces in America have waged an all-out legislative assault on transgender people, with discriminatory new laws in North Carolina and Mississippi, and similar legislation on the horizon in dozens of other states. These attacks are a stark reminder of the work that remains to create a world where all transgender people are treated equally under the law with dignity in their daily lives.

“As an organisation committed to transgender equality, we honour this important day by rededicating ourselves to lifting the voices of those we serve and working to achieve justice and equal rights.”
