A Canadian charity that assists people who are persecuted because of their sexual orientation says it has helped 35 LGBTQ individuals escape from Chechnya.

Rainbow Railroad says 31 of those it has helped leave Chechnya have now arrived in Canada.

In a statement Friday, Rainbow Railroad says it learned in April that Chechen government forces were abducting, torturing and murdering gay men within the country. Authorities in the predominantly Muslim republic have denied the reports of arrests and abuse.
