Homophobia hits Disney in Africa over gay character in Andi Mack
The Disney Channel has pulled the coming-of-age tween show Andi Mack over a storyline in which one of the characters, Cyrus, explores his sexuality after developing feelings for another boy, Jonah, in Africa.
It would be the first gay storyline to be featured in a Disney show.
The show was last week banned in Kenya (know as very homophobic country of many in Africa) over the gay storyline.
Disney Channel in South Africa serves multiple countries across Africa and the Middle East, each with its own regulations to which Disney adhere, according to The Cape Argus.
“Accordingly, Andi Mack will not be broadcast through DStv, however, Disney are exploring alternative ways to make the series available to its fans in South Africa.”
