For most of us looking to lose weight, turning to fad diets is often seen as a solution. However, while fad diets and extreme trends promise to deliver the perfect body, it’s important to realise that losing weight can be done in a much safer way. Whether you’re looking to achieve the perfect beach bod for summer or you’re simply wanting to meet your own personal weight loss goals, here’s what you need to know when it comes to going about things in a safe and effective way.

Knowing the basics

In terms of knowing the basics regarding dieting and staying slim, staying away from false and misleading information is key in safely losing weight. For instance, 2014 research actually shows that most people who search for tips on how to lose weight will come across false/misleading information. And, with a fad diet almost always being «in», it’s necessary to take into account that these, too, can be quite dangerous. For example, diets that guarantee extreme weight loss in a short amount of time are just one example of a dangerous type of diet to stay away from, especially since according to the CDC, the safest amount of weight to lose each week is between one and two pounds. However, when it comes to finding a healthy diet and sticking to it, there are some safety tips to keep in mind.

Maintaining a safe diet

The keto diet is perhaps one of the most popular diets out there right now, and while it can be dangerous in some instances, many have found success with achieving their weight loss goals through it. Sports nutritionist Rudy Mawer, for instance, has found success with the diet, saying that he uses the low-carb approach with some people who have trouble losing weight. However, he does note that the diet has its drawbacks, is a strict diet, and that «you have to do everything right». The keto diet is low in carbs and high in fats; therefore, having a low amount of carbs in your diet helps your body reach a ketogenic state. In  turn, this allows the body to break down stored fat. However, this diet can become difficult to manage under certain circumstances, such as if you don’t eat enough fat — which will leave you hungrier (and can lead to eating more calories than you need); thus proving the importance of a well managed diet.

Incorporating a healthy dose of exercise

In addition to managing a diet in a healthy way, incorporating exercise is vital in maintaining a healthy weight and meeting your weight loss goals, too. In fact, a study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise suggests 225 to 420 minutes of physical activity per week for effective weight loss. By ensuring that you create and maintain a regular exercise regime in addition to eating right, you can take the right steps towards effectively losing weight.

Losing weight and keeping slim can sound easy enough with the number of fad diets being advertised, though it’s important to keep in mind that these can be dangerous, and that there is a lot of false and misleading information out there. However, by safely managing a healthy diet alongside regular exercise, you’re sure to meet your goals in no time at all.
