A range of events is taking place in Bury to mark LGBTQ+ History Month, which runs from 1 to 28 February.
This annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history aims to promote equality and diversity, and remember how changes have been made over the years about people’s rights.
This year’s theme is «Behind the Lens», examining how LGBTQ+ lives are portrayed in the media versus the actual experiences of LGBTQ+ people. It also celebrates the contribution and work of LGBTQ+ people in TV and film, past and present.
Events:
- Thursday 2 February – LGBTQI + Domestic Abuse Awareness. This free event is held at the Fusilier Museum from 4pm to 5.30pm.
- Tuesday 7 February – Bury Youth Service LGBTQI+ session at The Met, in partnership with The Proud Trust. Session to focus on equality and diversity, explore views through informal education, raise awareness, discuss and challenge.
- Thursday 9 February – Hate Crime event on Radcliffe Market. Hosted by Bury LGBTQI+ Forum from 12pm to 4pm.
- Thursday 23 February – Hidden Voices; Hidden Histories – a celebration for LGBTQ+ History Month. Held at The Met from 7pm to 9pm.
Councillor Richard Gold, cabinet member for finance and communities, said: «We are proud to be a borough that celebrates our diverse communities and LGBT+ History Month is a great opportunity to do that. There are some fantastic events happening across Bury over the next month that will highlight our LGBTQ+ community voices as well as raise important issues. It is important that we celebrate and listen to the voices of our LGBTQ+ communities, and reflect on what more we can do to ensure inclusivity and equality are at the forefront of all we do».
