One BBC reporter queried whether there were any homosexual players on the Moroccan women’s football team as they met the media before to their historic World Cup debut.
«We know that gay marriage is illegal (in Morocco). Are there any gay players in the team? And what is it like for them?» a reporter asked the team’s captain Ghizlane Chebbak on Sunday.
The reporter who didn’t identify themselves before asking the question, according to media accounts, is employed by the BBC World Service.
The inquiry was cut off by a FIFA moderator who reminded the journalist that politics was not the topic at hand, newarab.com reports.
Over social media, journalists and fans slammed the reporter for their «harmful», «white saviour», and «sexist» question to the North African team.
