A statute rehabilitating gay troops who experienced prejudice went into effect two years ago, and according to the government, approximately $438,000 in symbolic compensation has been awarded thus far.
According to the German defence ministry, it has received 178 petitions for compensation from LGBTQ service members who have previously faced prejudice in the armed forces.
In a statement, the ministry stated that although it had anticipated more applications, «the goals of the law were achieved», nbcnews.com reports.
