Chief Constable Lauren Poultney of the force wrote: «I want you to know I have heard you». in an email to the Sheffield LGBTQ+ youth organisation SAYiT.

After a nationwide campaign in the UK led by Peter Tatchell, South Yorkshire Police is the third force to issue an apology.

The advocate for LGBTQ+ rights said it «draws a line” under previous wrongdoings.

Early in the month of June, the Peter Tatchell Foundation began a campaign urging all UK police chiefs to apologise for «decades-long victimisation» of the LGBTQ+ community, bbc.com reports.
