The death of Sakia Gunn became a flashpoint for Newark’s LGBTQ community
Fifteen-year-old Sakia Gunn was killed by stabbing in Newark 20 years ago. The young Black lesbian’s death caused a lot of tension in Newark’s LGBTQ community. On Saturday, a part of Halsey Street in Newark was given the name Sakia Gunn Way to honour her, njspotlightnews.org reports.
Valencia Bailey, who was with Gunn when she passed away, said that the sign would ensure that Gunn’s name would be remembered forever.
