Yesterday was the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia. This year ILGA-Europe highlights the issues of same-sex families and the legal obstacles that they face due to the lack of legal recognition in Europe.
Tomorrow, on 17 May, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia is being marked. Every year on this day ILGA-Europe looks at progress made by European countries towards respecting human rights and ensuring full legal equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people (LGBT) by publishing Rainbow Europe Map and Index.

Tomorrow, on 17 May, the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia is being marked. Every year on this day ILGA-Europe looks at progress made by European countries towards respecting human rights and ensuring full legal equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people (LGBT) by publishing Rainbow Europe Map and Index.
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe announced Thursday that it adopted a new convention to protect women from violence on 6 April 2011. ILGA-Europe regards this as a major step forward in the fight against gender-based violence and towards full protection of women across Europe from both domestic violence and in other circumstances such as violence in public places, forced marriage, rape, ‘honour’ crimes and genital mutilation.

European convention on violence against women to include protection for lesbian, bisexual and trans women
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe announced Thursday that it adopted a new convention to protect women from violence on 6 April 2011. Currently the Moldovan Parliament is debating an anti-discrimination law which in its current form provides protection against discrimination on various grounds, including sexual orientation. The draft law was approved by the Moldovan government and is now in the hands of parliamentarians.

The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights which constitutes an integral part of the Treaty of Lisbon is the first and the only international document containing provision that discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is prohibited.

The first international treaty banning sexual orientation discrimination comes into force today – the Treaty of Lisbon
Today the European Union’s Treaty of Lisbon is coming into force.
