The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) commends the U.S. Departments of Labor, Treasury, and Health and Human Services for issuing guidance yesterday stating that health insurance companies must cover sex-specific preventive care, including mammograms and pap smears, for transgender people. That care must be provided without regard to sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or recorded sex. Transgender people are routinely denied coverage when insurance companies arbitrarily determine that their care does not align with the sex listed in the insurer’s records.
