The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and European Professional Association for Transgender Health (EPATH) today jointly condemned recommendations from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare to stop gender affirming treatments for transgender youth.

«This guidance runs counter to science and the appropriate care of transgender and gender diverse youth. It purports to show concern for trans young people, when it does the exact opposite».

Scientific evidence shows that the use of pubertal delay and hormone therapy for transgender and gender diverse youth is safe, significantly increases quality of life, and reduces the risk of mental health difficulties. Guidelines for the assessment and treatment of trans and gender diverse youth have been published by reputable professional bodies, including the Endocrine Society, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and the American Psychiatric Association.

Transgender and gender diverse youth deserve to get the safe and effective care they need so they may live as their authentic selves. Advising practitioners to avoid administering vital gender affirming treatments is wrong and will put trans youth in harm’s way. We urge the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare to consult with experts in this field and reverse this detrimental guidance.”
