Former Air Force Officer Set to Testify in Gay Ban Lawsuit
A former Air Force major is expected to testify at a federal trial that involves the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which prohibits gays from openly serving in the military.
According to usnavyseals.com Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights organisation, filed a lawsuit that calls for an injunction to immediately put an end to the policy, according to a feature on the Navy Times. Since 1994, more than 13,500 service members have been fired because of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Mike Almy was among those who were dismissed due to the policy. The former major was fired in 2006, after a routine search on computers revealed personal e-mails that he wrote while he was deployed in Iraq. These e-mails were turned over to his commander and his discharge papers showed that he was dismissed because of “homosexual admission”, usnavyseals.com reports.
