Revolutionizing AIDS: Support Group Pioneer Recounts Decades of Change
In a revealing memoir, one man recounts his role in revolutionising AIDS care and pioneering one of the world’s first AIDS support organisations.
In Delicate Courage, author Jim Geary brings readers a revealing memoir that chronicles his role in the development of the first HIV support group in San Francisco against the backdrop of his own integration of sexuality and spirituality. Detailing his work to defeat the California Briggs initiative in 1978 and his own HIV diagnosis, the book’s main thread is Geary’s 20-year relationship with his partner who later died of AIDS.
“Having started one of the first AIDS support groups in the world and working intimately with AIDS patients at the beginning of the epidemic, I knew I had insights and stories to share,” says Geary.
Offering honest and revealing insight into gay relationships, the book simultaneously highlights the onset of AIDS in the gay community. Detailing Geary’s time in Washington, D.C. and his political activism against Vietnam, the book also addresses overall issues of self-acceptance and coping with grief.
Strikingly honest, Delicate Courage concludes with over 35 uplifting after-death communications between Geary and his former partner, aiming to capitalize on the triumphant and resilient nature of love in the face of adversity.
“I wrote this book because I wanted to illustrate that no matter how difficult and painful our personal battles are, it is still possible to live a life of unconditional love and authenticity,” says Geary.
