In Delicate Courage, author Jim Geary brings readers a revealing memoir that chronicles his role in the development of the first HIV support group in San Francisco against the backdrop of his own integration of sexuality and spirituality. Detailing his work to defeat the California Briggs initiative in 1978 and his own HIV diagnosis, the book’s main thread is Geary’s 20-year relationship with his partner who later died of AIDS.
“Having started one of the first AIDS support groups in the world and working intimately with AIDS patients at the beginning of the epidemic, I knew I had insights and stories to share,” says Geary.
Offering honest and revealing insight into gay relationships, the book simultaneously highlights the onset of AIDS in the gay community. Detailing Geary’s time in Washington, D.C. and his political activism against Vietnam, the book also addresses overall issues of self-acceptance and coping with grief.

About the author
Jim Geary facilitates workshops on spiritual healing, grief, sexuality and intimacy, AIDS issues and after-death communication for various local and national organizations. He became involved with the Shanti Project in 1979, a San Francisco Bay area peer-counseling agency. He served as executive director for seven years, expanding the organization into its current position as an internationally acclaimed model of AIDS services.
Geary currently resides in Ormond Beach, Fla., with his partner of 10 years, Jeff. This is his first book.
