UCLA-Based Think Tank on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law and Policy Marks 10 Years of Work
The Williams Institute, a leading legal and public policy think tank addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, will hold a 10th Anniversary Celebration as part of its Annual Update Conference. The Williams Institute, a leading legal and public policy think tank addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, will hold a 10th Anniversary Celebration as part of its Annual Update Conference. The conference will be held April 7-9, 2011 at the UCLA School of Law.
Highlights of this year’s conference include keynotes by Rep. Judy Chu (CA-32) and U.S. Census Director Robert M. Groves, as well as expert panels on employment discrimination, parenting, health disparities, same-sex marriage and social movements.
The conference’s opening night, on April 7, will include a Founders Dinner at the residence of UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block. Rep. Chu will speak at the Gala Reception, to be held on the evening of April 8. Friday’s events will also include the final round of the Williams Institute’s 7th Annual Moot Court Competition, at which argue the question of affirmative action with respect to sexual orientation before a panel of distinguished state and federal judges.
Keynote Speakers Include
The Honorable Judy Chu, Congresswoman, U.S. House of Representatives, CA-32. Throughout both her tenure in Congress and her prior career in local government, Rep. Chu has been a steadfast advocate of equality for her lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) constituents.
Robert M. Groves, Director of the U.S. Census. Director Groves is leading a research program designed to improve the accuracy and validity of data collected about same-sex couples. This data is critical to the work of the Williams Institute. An unprecedented outreach to the LGBT community took place during the 2010 Census count, including educational outreach materials produced through collaboration between the Williams Institute and Census Bureau.
