How homophobic bullying led to tragedy for one family
Although 19 years have passed since homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland, being gay and young can still have tragic consequences today.
Research has shown that a shocking one-in-five young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Irish people attempt suicide, many as a result of homophobic bullying.
The number of young people who end up taking their own lives, meanwhile, is unknown.
Next month, campaigners against the homophobic bullying of young people will present the groundbreaking Irish model for eliminating the practice to a worldwide audience at a UNESCO conference in Paris, independent.ie reports.
