Commenting on research published Monday by Bournemouth University, which shows that homophobic behaviour is frequently going unchallenged in school and college sport, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

‘This report makes for grim reading and shows how homophobia is still part and parcel of school and college sport. Young people are being allowed to get away with being abusive and in some cases are being actively egged on.

‘The TUC has been working with the Professional Footballers’ Association and a number of grass roots campaigns to try and change attitudes and behaviours. However, we need more help from the government and sporting authorities to turn their words into action.

‘There must be a zero tolerance policy towards homophobia at all levels of sport as well as the threat of proper sanctions. Homophobic behaviour must be challenged where and when it happens, not dismissed as harmless banter.’
