
Gay Diplomats Say U.S State Department Is Failing Their Families
“If we’re going to stand up for LGBT rights around the world we need to stand up for our own American diplomats and their families,” an LGBT employee organisation leader says.
Multiple LGBT foreign service officers said in interviews with BuzzFeed News that they have had their careers upended because of how the U.S. State Department handles overseas placements for employees in same-sex relationships.
“If we don’t stand up for our own LGBT families, all the homophobic countries will pick up on that signal — and they have,” Selim Ariturk said. “If we’re going to stand up for LGBT rights around the world, we need to stand up for our own American diplomats and their families.”
