Youth sport ‘not safe’ for homosexual men and women in Australia – survey
The world’s first study on homophobia in sport has revealed an alarming statistic: 70% of respondents feel that youth sport in Australia is not safe and supportive for gay people.
The Out on the Fields study canvassed the views of almost 9,500 people – of which around a quarter were heterosexual men and women – and primarily from English-speaking countries.
The research focused on issues of sexuality in team sports and compared the results amongst the six major nations involved. It found homosexual men in Australia were the second most likely to participate in youth team sports behind New Zealand.
The report was commissioned by the Bingham Cup Sydney – the gay rugby World Cup – in partnership with a coalition of sporting organisations.
