This Saturday Mellerud Pride is celebrated for the first time in the small Swedish town by the lake of Vänern.
During two days the Swedish town Mellerud will celebrate Pride and are organised by the Youth Council and today Friday the festival started with crafts in the city’s schools.
The reason why Mellerud got it’s own pride are explained like this : “The Youth Council received an email from a bunch of 12-year-old girls who wanted to organise a Pride festival in Mellerud. They got the idea after a sports lesson in which the word “gay” had been used as a term of abuse.
The teacher had raised the topic with the class and said that being “gay” is when a man who is in love with another man, not when someone are running strange, and that gay is not a word to be disparaging.
The 12 year old girls wanted to do something to get more people to understand that everyone can love whoever they want, and get words like “gay” to be stopped to be used as an insult”, the Swedish LGBTQ site QX.se reports.
Happy Pride Mellerud !
