Queer Kampala International Film Festival is the first ever and only LGBTQI themed film festival to open up in Uganda.
After the Anti-Homosexuality bill passed in 2014, the environment for Queer Ugandans became dangerous. Many queer Ugandans have fled to Kenya and yet many remain, living under threat of violence or arrest.
The arts have always facilitated dialogue and opened channels for understanding. The Queer Kampala International Film Festival will be the first of its kind. Our primary goal is to increase awareness and tolerance of sexual identity through increased public exposure using film. Our second goal is to support courageous filmmakers who are passionate about sharing queer stories in an environment where LGBTQI people are criminalised. We feel it is urgent to spread the correct information on sexual identity to the public and promote the dignity of LGBTQI s through the medium of film and dialogue.
The festival will span 3 days in December 2016, drawing crowds from across the region with film premieres, artist talks, panel discussions and parties that focus primarily on LGBTQI themed films from Uganda, Pan Africa and across the world.
They don’t have ongoing external financial sources as this is their first year in operation. Will you help? You can donate here.
