Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund is deeply troubled by a recent report that the Trump Administration provided guidelines to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), banning the use of seven words in budget requests. Those words are “transgender,” “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “fetus,” “evidence-based,” and “science-based.”
Statement from TLDEF Executive Director Jillian Weiss
“The Administration’s word ban is yet another attack on our existence and our humanity. This time, it’s an attempt to erase us altogether, by prohibiting the mere mention of the word ‘transgender.’ Sadly, this alarming move is no surprise. It’s part of a larger pattern of actions against our trans communities that have put us in harm’s way. The CDC and other federal agencies are here to help the people of the United States — all the people, and not merely a select few who are deemed politically acceptable.
“This demonstrates the Trump Administration’s continued inability to recognise the Federal Government’s obligation to embrace all Americans. The federal budget is a moral document, and our Constitution requires that we must provide equal protection of the laws to all people.
“TLDEF remains committed to our mission of fighting for equality, regardless of policies created in Washington D.C. targeting trans people. We stand united with other groups to fight on the side of science and truth, and the rights of people throughout our nation to have the support of their government, which exists, according to our Constitution, for the sole purpose of serving its people, and not the other way around.”
