3 Top Skincare Tips Gay Men Can Offer the World
Jackie Edwards has put together top 3 tips about skincare that gay men has shared with the world.
If there is one thing that your typical gay man knows more than a lot of women, it is how to take care of your skin. If you are a fan of the Netflix hit show Queer Eye, you will undoubtedly be familiar with the show’s lead groomer Jonathan Van Ness. The lively hairdresser with the infectious laugh is responsible for revamping individual’s hair and skincare routines, teaching them how to take care of themselves the best they can. While gay men world-wide have always been known to look after their appearance, shows such as Queer Eye has without a doubt made gay skincare a force to be reckoned with. Of all the tips and tricks shared on the TV show three, in particular, deserve to be embraced by any skin-conscious man.
Always apply sunscreen
If there is one part of a skincare routine that many men overlook it is protecting their skin against the sun. Whenever you spend time outdoors (even during your typical gloomy UK winter) you are exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. These UV rays are not only known to speed up signs of aging such as uneven pigmentation and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but can lead to more severe complications such as skin cancer as well. Van Ness applies sunscreen every day as part of his skincare regime and advises other men to do the same. Whether you use a stand-alone product or a moisturiser with built-in sunscreen is entirely up to you. Just make sure you opt for nothing less than an SPF 30 or you may find your flawless complexion ruined by nasty sunburn.
Invest in a good eye cream
There aren’t many beauty products that Van Ness loves as much as a luxurious eye cream, and with good reason. Nothing gives away your age quite as fast as the lines around your eyes do. This is because the skin around your eyes is a lot thinner than anywhere else on your face, making it prone to more visible lines and wrinkles. Using a good quality eye cream on a daily basis can significantly slow down the signs of ageing by effectively brightening the eye area while also reducing any puffiness. Even the hardiest of crow’s feet do, luckily, not stand a chance against the superpowers of anti-ageing eye cream or serum.
Take care of your lips
There are few things quite as unappealing as a man with dry, chapped lips. During an episode of Queer Guythat featured a former U.S. Marine, Jonathan shared his recipe for what he referred to as ‘the world’s easiest lip scrub’. While making your own scrub may sound like a lot of hard work it is literally as easy as mixing together half a cup of virgin coconut oil with two tablespoons of brown sugar, a dollop of honey, and a few drops of your favourite essential oil together. Simply proceed to rub the mixture on your lips before wiping off with a wet, warm cloth. Follow the lip scrub with a quality lip balm with an SPF of at least 30 to render your lips soft, plump and kissable.
Unless you want to look old before your time, taking care of your skin is of the utmost importance. By following a skincare routine conducive of a glowing complexion you are bound to continue looking dazzling even when you do start getting older.
