Today’s fashion industry is being slowly but surely dominated by the LGBTQ community – and it’s for the better. LGBT designers, photographers, and stylists are taking root in the world of fashion.

As people with purpose, statistics show that 72 percent of consumers who identify as gays and lesbians prefer to buy from companies that cater to them. Thus, LGBTQ-owned fashion brands are slowly rising, and even big-named companies are releasing Pride-exclusive clothing during Pride celebrations.

More members of the LGBTQ community are also happily expressing themselves through their clothing. Young people are taking their style cues from celebrities like Lil Nas X, Billy Porter, Kristen Stewart, and Miley Cyrus. However, it’s also important to note the sartorial contributions of older LGBTQ icons, such as Ian McKellen and Elton John. Not only are they way ahead of their time, but they also showed how to seize the spotlight just by being their authentically fabulous self.

Colourful and vibrant looks

Dressing in a classic style and adding splashes of colour in your attire can give you a confidence boost. Moreover, timeless looks consisting of clothes with simple and elegant cuts can be further elevated by accentuating it with a bold or bright colour. If you need inspiration on how to dress well in colourful clothes, look no further than Sir Ian McKellen. Six decades into his career and the “Lord of The Rings” actor has never lost his touch – the popular science fiction and fantasy star certainly knows how to put jolly in Hollywood. Strutting into the London Pride Shown in 2019, he proudly wore a rainbow coat and cyan blue pants that can be noticed from miles away. What’s more? He wears such boldly-patterned scarves during various events, and it’s becoming his trademark. Meanwhile, American actress and playwright Holland Taylor takes the word fabulous at seventy on a whole other level, charming the fans with her black suit and tie. Too boring? Not until she turns around and shows her lovely neon pink buttons and lapel trims that mixes formal and excitement in one.

Neutral classics

Natural fabrics may not always be a head-turner as opposed to bright colours, but wearing these neutral ensembles gives off a clean, organised vibe. Hues such as ivory, tan, mocha, chocolate, and other colours in the nude spectrum can become the building blocks of a person’s wardrobe. With the right mix and match, dominating the style scene is not a far-fetched idea at all.

Versatile everyday pieces in earth colours have such endless possibilities. Take for instance Victor Garber. Known for various roles in Hollywood films, Garber gives spirit to the clothing he chooses to wear. As a leading actor on Broadway for most of his career, he is one LGBTQ icon that can sweep the audience off their feet. Often sporting a brown ensemble, this celebrity knows to match his style to give off that classic gentleman vibe. Wearing a brown coat and a checkered tie paired with khaki slacks, the «Titanic» actor’s charisma attracts young and old alike.

Beyond Pride

Dressing in a classic way can give off an elegant aura, but sometimes a creative style can give off a whole different mood. From leather suits, Donald Duck costumes, pink mohawks, and leopard skin trilbies, Elton John is not only globally recognised for his music, but also for the bomb outfits he brings with him. Stretchy jumpsuits, sequins, and double denim with patches are never too much, especially if you’re Elton and appreciate gender-bending signature fashion.

Style has no age or gender. As shown by these senior LGBTQ celebrities, you can look good and feel great just by expressing yourself through your fashion choices.
