LGBTQ Inspiration For Your Next Interior Design Project
Is it time to give a room or your entire home a makeover?
Take your inspiration from some of the leading lights of Britain’s LGBTQ interior design and decoration community. We’ve taken a look at leading figures through the ages because we know that, while design trends are important, there’s greater freedom than ever when it comes to self-expression. You’re sure to find something to inspire you to enhance not only the value of your property but, as House & Garden reported, your mental wellbeing, too.
Collections For Personality – Martyn Lawrence Bullard
Born in London and based in Los Angeles, Martyn Lawrence Bullard arguably is most famous for interior designs characterised by bold colours, drama, and whimsy. Livingetc reported that Bullard appreciates the no-rules approach to interior decoration. For him, “A happy home is a place to feel safe in, to revive the senses in, and to be yourself in.” It’s all about colour, form, light, and texture.
According to Bullard, one of the best ways to express your personality through interior design is to use accessories and showcase collections that express your personal tastes. One of his suggestions for a collection that touches on form and light is to cover a wall with hand mirrors, which will add character, inspire the imagination, and make you smile.
Bring Blue Into Your Kitchen – Luke Edward Hall
In 2020, Elle Décor reported on a supper party Luke Edward Hall and Duncan Campbell hosted to show off their new kitchen in which the colour cobalt blue played a significant role. Combined with Palladian architectural references in the design, the result was “playful and unexpected.”
Their use of blue in their kitchen was almost prophetic, and it’s certainly one to consider. As numerous studies show, colour can have a profound effect on mind and mood. Dark cobalt blue might not be everyone’s choice, so we recommend taking a look at the Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 – Very Peri. This shade of periwinkle blue is all about an attitude that is joyous, sprightly, and inspires creativity and imagination. Needless to say, this happy shade of blue will brighten your day.
Awesome Earth Tones – Craig Revel Horwood
In December last year, Yahoo!Life reported that Craig Revel Horwood, who owns an interior design firm with his partner, has moved away from his stark, minimalist approach to design in his home. The couple’s new home will be decorated in earthen tones. Warm, welcoming, and grounding, earth tones can help you create a happy space in your home. Earth tones need not be all browns, reds, and rusts. House Beautiful featured an entryway painted in greige (beige with grey undertones) and decorated with cool lavender accents such as chair covers and rugs. If you have rich wooden floors, consider painting the walls with a grey paint that has blue undertones.
Inspiration From Nature – Ben Pentreath
Interior decorator to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Ben Pentreath is known for his use of nature-inspired wallpapers and prints, as seen in House and Garden. Natural colours play an important role, as do monochromatic elements. Natural inspiration doesn’t need to be limited to wallpapers and prints, however. According to Vogue, nature-inspired surfaces and objects are one of the big design trends of 2022. Whether you’re looking at new kitchen surfaces, backsplashes, baths, decorative objects, or furniture, consider choosing natural materials such as marble, stoneware, terracotta, travertine, or wood.
The past couple of years have seen us spend more time in our homes, something that sounded the death-knell of clinical minimalism. It’s time for warmth, joy, personality, creativity, and self-expression to take over.
