New report on public attitudes to LGBTQ+ community to be published tomorrow
A new report into public attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland is to be published tomorrow, Tuesday, 1st March.
«Across the Spectrum: Attitudes towards Minoritised Genders and Sexualities in Ireland» is being published by NXF, the National LGBT Federation, which campaigns for the equal rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland and internationally.
The report is based on research conducted by the NXF over 2021, and focuses on three key areas:
- Public attitudes towards different groups of people within the LGBTQ+ community, including lesbian women, gay men, bisexual people, trans people, non-binary and intersex people;
- Beliefs about gender and sexuality; and
- Public support for policies relevant to and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, such as hate crime legislation.
Commenting ahead of the report launch, Dr Chris Noone, report author, psychologist and NXF board member said: «Ireland has experienced significant progress in extending rights and resources towards its LGBTQ+ community in recent years, and there is a general perception that public attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland is largely positive. There is evidence to support this perception in our report».
«However, the report also shows evidence that certain groups of people within the LGBTQ+ community need greater support from society, including bisexual people, trans and non-binary people and intersex people. The publication of the report will raise awareness of gaps in support for groups within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as highlighting the policies that will need to be implemented to ensure increased awareness, understanding and the practical support needed to further equality in Ireland».
The report will be officially launched with an online event at 7pm tomorrow. Hosted by NXF Board member Anna Nolan, the event will feature panel discussions and Q&As on the attitudes towards minoritised gender and sexual identities; so-called «conversion therapy»; and hate crime, and speakers include:
- Report author Dr Chris Noone, psychologist at NUI Galway and NXF board member;
- Wyatt Walsh from Bi+ Ireland;
- Dr Conor Buggy, Associate Professor in Occupational and Environmental Studies at the School of Public Health at UCD NXF Research Team member;
- Alan Edge, LGBT Ireland;
- Ailsa Spindler, Gay Project;
- Professor Kath Browne, social / cultural geographer at University College Dublin with a focus on sexualities and gender.
- Chris Gebhardt from Dublin Pride; and

The report will be available to download at 11am tomorrow on NXF’s website, www.nxf.ie.
