Discover the documentary series «Chemsexvågen i gayvärlden» that provides an in-depth look into this phenomenon in Sweden.
The Normalisation of Chemsex in the Gay Community
In a closed subculture within the gay community, the use of hard drugs and risky sexual behavior has become normalised. This phenomenon, known as chemsex, has been prevalent in other countries for quite some time. Now, there are indications that this wave has reached Sweden as well. On 30 April 2024, the documentary series «Chemsexvågen i gayvärlden» will be released, providing a comprehensive depiction of this phenomenon in Sweden.
Understanding Chemsex
Chemsex refers to the practice of using heavy drugs to enhance or intensify sexual experiences among men. For a year, journalist August Håkansson has had conversations with numerous men who engage in chemsex. Through these discussions, the series aims to shed light on the inner workings of this subculture. The first episode of the series begins with the «chemsex riot» in Stockholm in 2019, when the Swedish police encountered this phenomenon for the first time.
The Allure and Consequences of Chemsex
Men involved in chemsex describe a heightened sense of pleasure and sensation during sexual encounters. One participant, referred to as «Magnus», explains that the usual feelings of pleasure and sensory presence experienced during sex are taken to new levels. However, the series also delves into the darker side of chemsex, as it explores the story of Peter, who became deeply addicted to methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth, during his time in the chemsex world.
Peter’s addiction led him to lose sight of his future and opportunities, consumed by his desire to smoke meth. The series aims to examine both the attractions of chemsex and its consequences for individuals and society at large.
Concerns and Challenges
Law enforcement agencies express concerns that the trend of chemsex has contributed to the rise of methamphetamine addiction in Sweden, particularly among individuals who have not been previously involved in substance abuse and who have gone unpunished. Additionally, healthcare professionals often lack the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively assist the growing number of men seeking help for chemsex-related issues.
The documentary series «Chemsexvågen i gayvärlden» is a collaboration between journalist August Håkansson, producers Anna Johannessen and Håkan Engström, and Tredje Statsmakten Media. The first episode will be available on April 30 at 06:00 on Sverige’s Radio Play and will be broadcasted on Sverige’s Radio (SR) P1 at 14:03 CET.
