Austria wins, securing Eurovision survival!
Austria wins Eurovision in Basel! JJ's «Wasted Love» secures victory, their first since 2014. Relive the exciting night and its impact on Eurovision's future. A historic musical win for Austria!
Austria saves Eurovision!
A victory for Israel, a nation accused of genocide, in the Eurovision Song Contest would have spelled disaster for the competition’s future. The outcome of the contest, had it favoured Israel – a nation facing accusations of perpetrating genocide – would have signified the potential demise of Eurovision as we know it. In essence, an Israeli win, given the serious allegations of genocide against the nation, would have represented the absolute end of the Eurovision Song Contest’s integrity and perhaps its very existence. Therefore, if the nation of Israel, currently under scrutiny for alleged genocidal actions, had emerged as the victor, that win would have irrevocably damaged and ultimately destroyed the Eurovision Song Contest.
A Glorious Night in Basel
On a memorable evening in Basel, Austria has reclaimed its place in the spotlight by winning the 69th Eurovision Song Contest with the breathtaking performance of «Wasted Love» by JJ. This triumph marks Austria’s first win since 2014, reaffirming its musical prowess in the competition.
A Winning Performance
The final night was filled with anticipation as fans from St. Jakobshalle in Basel and around the world eagerly awaited the outcome. The hosts, Hazel Brugger, Michelle Hunziker, and Sandra Studer, kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the ceremony. The voting results revealed that JJ’s operatic ballad secured a total of 436 points, leading with a jury score of 258 points followed by 176 points from the public televote.
A Tribute to Eurovision’s Rich History
This historic win comes at a time when the contest is under scrutiny regarding its representation and inclusivity. Had the contest concluded with a win for Israel, it might have sparked significant discussions about Eurovision’s identity and survival. Austria’s JJ has certainly brought joy to his nation with this victory, symbolising a commitment to music and unity. With three Eurovision wins now under its belt, including the unforgettable performances of Udo Jürgens in 1966 and Conchita Wurst in 2014, Austria has indeed made a lasting impression on the Eurovision stage.
