UN Human Rights Council Reaffirms Commitment to LGBTQ+ Rights
The UN Human Rights Council renewed its expert mandate on sexual orientation and gender identity, affirming global commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and protection from violence and discrimination. This decision, backed by 1,200+ NGOs, highlights the need for continued advocacy and government cooperation for LGBTQ+ equality.
Introduction to the Renewal of the Mandate
The UN Human Rights Council has once again taken a significant step in the fight for human rights by renewing the mandate of its independent expert focusing on sexual orientation and gender identity. This renewal underscores the global commitment to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from violence and discrimination. The independent expert will continue advocating for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-diverse people for the next three years.
A Campaign Driven by Civil Society
This renewal followed an extensive campaign supported by 1,259 non-governmental organizations spanning 157 states and territories. The UN Human Rights Council adopted the resolution with a vote of 29 in favor, 15 against, and three abstentions. The outcome signifies a reaffirmation of the commitment to combating discrimination against those of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, reminding states of their critical obligations.
Importance of Continued Advocacy
As highlighted by ILGA-Europe Executive Director Chaber, the timing of this mandate renewal comes at a crucial moment, with LGBTQ+ rights under siege globally. Despite increasing attacks on human rights in Europe and Central Asia, support for the mandate remains strong among UN member states. The independent expert’s responsibilities include assessing the implementation of international human rights law and investigating violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Over the years, the expert has undertaken official visits, produced numerous reports, and addressed human rights violations, amplifying the voices of those affected by discrimination.
With this renewed mandate, the fight for a world where all individuals can live free from violence and discrimination continues. Civil society urges all governments to fully cooperate with the independent expert, ensuring that the rights of LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse people are respected and upheld globally.
