Tim Gill to Receive Liberty Hill Foundation’s Highest Honour
Noted LGBTQ rights philanthropist and donor organiser Tim Gill will receive the Liberty Hill Foundation's Upton Sinclair Award honouring leaders at the front lines of change on May 11th at the Beverly Hilton.
Liberty Hill Foundation’s annual Upton Sinclair Dinner celebrates and honours leaders at the front lines of change in Los Angeles and beyond. This year’s recipient of the namesake Upton Sinclair Award is noted LGBTQ rights philanthropist and donor organiser Tim Gill.
This year’s fundraising gala takes place on May 11, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton. Liberty Hill expects more than 600 friends, supporters, and allies to join in celebration of Tim and their other 2011 honourees. All proceeds will support Liberty Hill’s mission of change, not charity.
The Upton Sinclair award is given annually to a person whose life-long crusade for equality and justice inspires us even today. This year’s recipient, Tim Gill, is honoured for his vision, passion and leadership in helping to create and continuing to inspire the modern day LGBTQ donor movement. Through his personal philanthropy, the founding of the Gill Foundation and grant-making programs like The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado and OutGiving, as well as the creation of Gill Action and Political OutGiving, Tim has mobilised thousands of individuals giving millions of charitable and political dollars that have increased the legal protections for millions across the country and improved the lives of Coloradans.
Despite the progress of the last few decades with the passing of some anti-discrimination and hate crimes laws, full equality for LGBTQ people has not been reached particularly in recognising families. Many LGBTQ people, especially low-income, people of colour, and transgender people continue to face barriers. Liberty Hill’s goal is to Advance Equality – to make full equality a reality for every Angeleno regardless of race, income or sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

Since 2000, Liberty Hill has invested nearly $5 million in grassroots leadership working to advance equality for lesbian and gay Angelenos. The other honourees at Liberty Hill’s annual fundraiser include: Gary Stewart, a donor activist whose influence on organizations, businesses and individuals has sparked many towards a lens of activism, will receive the Founders Award given for unwavering philanthropic support of social justice issues; and Margarita Ramirez who will receive the Wally Marks Changemaker Award for her 30 years of service with Liberty Hill that have made a significant mark on Los Angeles.
