Jake Trevor: Redefining Taboos through Electropop

Jake Trevor, the electrifying New York City (NYC) artist, has recently released his explicit single «Boyfriend». Known for his ability to seamlessly transition from stirring Adele-esque ballads to the pure joy of electronic dance music, Trevor joins the ranks of trailblazers who have pushed the envelope of sexual taboos in the music industry.

Inspired by the likes of Madonna, George Michael, Nicki Minaj, and Cardi B, Trevor’s song «Boyfriend» is a NSFW (Not Safe for Work), gay-sex-positive, electropop heater. It evokes images of shirtless men writhing in steamy, dark back rooms or clandestine raves. Trevor aims to normalise homosexuality, challenging the historical shame and stigma associated with it. He wanted to create a vulgar and shameless song that simultaneously feels fun and unsafe to listen to, sparking conversations and breaking barriers.

A Journey of Rebellion and Empowerment

Trevor’s debut self-titled album, «Jake Trevor», takes listeners on a captivating journey through piano balladry, electrifying club bangers, coffeehouse folk, and soulful indie-pop. The album is threaded with themes of rebellion and empowerment, delving into topics such as family, homophobia, religion, love, and sex. Trevor approaches these subjects with passion and hope, crafting a collection of deeply emotional and joyfully exhilarating tracks.

Before his rise to musical prominence, Trevor embarked on a personal and artistic exploration. He took odd jobs, worked as a bartender, and saved up enough money to purchase a cheap Yamaha keyboard and a Taylor 714ce acoustic guitar. Immersing himself in the vibrant neighbourhoods of NYC, Trevor rode the subway and observed buskers playing music. Inspired by their performances, he mustered the courage to start busking himself.

«Busking is the best way to overcome nerves and connect with people from all over the world», Trevor explains. «But more than anything, I love witnessing people’s immediate reactions. I once played John Lennon’s ‘Imagine,’ and an older woman watched with tears streaming down her face. Making those meaningful connections through music is unparalleled. People would miss their trains just to listen. Capturing anyone’s attention in New York City for two minutes truly means something. The subway is the greatest stage on earth».

A Discography of Authenticity

Prior to the release of his debut LP, Trevor unveiled a series of singles that showcased his versatility and authenticity. The first single, «Pieces», is a poignant piano ballad that explores the fragility of life and relationships. «What I Want», a powerful and energetic anthem, encourages listeners to fearlessly pursue their desires. The pop-funk break-up track, «Bitch Don’t Come Back», channels the cathartic release of expressing anger and moving on. «Yellowtape» delves into the allure of temptation, even when it may not be the wisest choice in the long run.

The self-titled album, «Jake Trevor», signifies a rebirth and the emergence of a new artist. Trevor underwent significant personal changes to become the artist we hear on this record. With unapologetic pride, he reveals his true self to the world. The album encompasses soul-spilling ballads and infectious dance tracks, offering a comprehensive portrait of Trevor’s artistry.

In the track «Boyfriend», Trevor sings, «Man on man / Goddamn / Don’t let my father walk in».He intimately understands what it means to lose everything and start anew. Trevor acknowledges the experiences of countless LGBTQ+ youth who have been kicked out of their homes and left to navigate the world alone. He dreams of establishing an organization to support these individuals, providing them with a safe haven and a voice.

Through his music and advocacy, Jake Trevor is redefining taboos and fostering acceptance. His electrifying sound and unapologetic lyrics serve as a beacon of hope for those who have faced adversity. With each song, Trevor encourages listeners to embrace their true selves and surround themselves with love and acceptance.
