Straight couple’s nightmare could have been saved by same-sex marriage law

A British woman has had her marriage dissolved and her dreams of living permanently in Australia wrecked by the fact she is officially a man.

Kim Walmsley was accidentally listed as male on her birth certificate and, upon finding this out, her marriage was declared illegal.

A law allowing gay marriage was officially passed in Australia late last year, but was repealed soon after by the High Court.

Mrs Walmsley and her now former husband, Jack, found out the heartbreaking news while applying for permanent residency in Australia.

The mother of five thought it was just a small misunderstanding that a form or two could sort out.
